About Boys’ Tennis
The Washburn Men’s Tennis program was built from a small program, barely able to fill a varsity roster, into one of the strongest teams in the Twin Cities. The Varsity team has won both the Minneapolis Public Schools and Twin Cities’ titles for the past seven years and has performed very well in a highly competitive state section. Several past players have gone on to play college tennis, which further reflects the strength of the program. Washburn Tennis promotes the principles of “Academics, Attitude, Effort & Sportsmanship,” within each player. This approach is demonstrated in players’ strong leadership on and off the court, with the majority receiving All-Conference recognition as student athletes, as well as Academic All-State honors.
This remarkable growth has been accomplished with a coach who has a strong vision for the future of this program and believes there should be a place for everyone who wants to play. Head Coach Ryan Hoag was selected to receive the National No Cut Coach Award from the U.S. Tennis Association in 2013—a testament to his leadership on and off the court.
