Love Morgan Courts

Morgan Courts Update 3/10/2020:

Thanks to all of you who have supported our Morgan Courts efforts!  While progress has been slower than anticipated , we are hopeful we are getting closer to moving forward to restore these courts.  A small group of us has continued to work with the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, specifically with Asst. Superintendent Michael Schroeder and his staff.  Michael asked that we pass along the following update to the group.  In general, MPRB originally wanted to include additional amenities surrounding the courts, but given the budget realities have scaled back their plans to remove the existing pavement and reconstruct with a new asphalt surface, provide new fencing with a concrete maintenance strip and new nets.  The general approach would be similar to that which was done the Linden Hills courts in 2012.
From Asst. Superintendent Schroeder:
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board continues to explore methods of delivering improved facilities for tennis at Morgan Courts in the Lynnhurst neighborhood. Tennis improvements to Morgan Courts were twice bid, with bidders returning bids significantly greater than the funds allocated.  MPRB staff reached out directly to contractors to better understand conditions of the construction market and found, not surprisingly, that contractors are as busy as they have ever been.  The MPRB remains committed to delivering improved facilities for tennis at Morgan.  The current effort related to the Morgan Avenue courts is focused on narrowing the scope of the project to the courts themselves, with no expanded site improvements.  Within this more focused approach the effort is to separate out 3 primary scopes of work to then publicly bid through the Target Market Program.  With this approach we would expect to see lower bids, bids that align better with the current funding.  If suitable bids are received, staff will move directly toward contracting the work.  Other planned improvements which were removed from the refined scope would occur later when other funding becomes available.

Morgan Tennis Courts are nestled within Minnehaha Creek Park, part of a regional system of parks in Minneapolis. The courts are positioned within a prime location in the Lynnhurst neighborhood in south Minneapolis. Morgan Courts provide hours of tennis for neighborhood and community members, and also serve as the home courts for Washburn High School Boys’ and Girls’ tennis teams.

  • Over the past few years, Morgan Courts have fallen into serious disrepair.
  • Recreational tennis players and the Washburn teams have stopped using the courts, due to concern about the potential for injury.
  • The Washburn Tennis Boys’ Tennis Team, which currently rosters 45 boys on a no-cut team, was forced to relocate 2017 varsity practices to a Bloomington park, a 30 minute drive from Washburn High School!
