Thomas Leicester stepped into the singles lineup for the first time this season and lead the team to a convincing victory against Minneapolis South. Washburn won without dropping a set. Senior Evan Walker picked up his first varsity win at third doubles.
The Washburn tennis team faced stiff competition this weekend in a flighted tournament in Rochester. Competing in the tournament were five teams ranked in top 10 of state. Rochester Mayo finished first while Minnetonka and Mounds View (defending state champ) rounded out the top three. Washburn finished fifth, ahead of #7 ranked Lakeville South in the 8 team field. The Millers can clinch their fifth consecutive conference championship this week with a win over Minneapolis South on Tuesday.
Washburn moves to 10-3 with a hard fought win over Holy Family. Despite missing players due to injury, Washburn managed a close 4-3 victory over Holy Family Friday. Rafa Malewicz led the way with a convincing victory in singles. Washburn now sets its sights on today’s tournament in Rochester.
Led by senior Andy Pulkrabek’s last conference match, the Millers ran their consecutive conference streak to 27 straight victories over a five year span with their convincing 7-0 victory over previously undefeated Minneapolis Edison. The Washburn Millers JV Blue team hosted a match against Cretin-Derham Hall’s JV(B) team. Washburn‘s singles lineup of Eli Zukor-Zimmermann, Vaughn Smith, Fletcher Thomas, and Luca Cordova Stuart clinched the win for the team and Evan Walker and Jack Redepenning scored a win at #3 doubles to give the Millers a 5-2 victory.
Spearheaded by Henry Smith’s return to the singles lineup, Washburn defeated Burnsville 6-1 Monday in Burnsville. Washburn had five matches where they lost 3 or fewer games en route to their win against their sectional foe. Next up is a scrimmage on Wednesday against Hastings
(MINNEAPOLIS) Coming off of a big tournament weekend win in Alexandria, the Washburn JV Tennis Team (6-1) hosted a match against the Burnsville Blaze. Lead by a quick wins from David Hovis (9) and the team of Ben Anderson (8)/Emerson Roy (8), the Millers blazed a 7-0 victory.
