Harding Tournament

Washburn faced good competition in the St Paul Harding tournament and got a number of quality matches in.  Changing the lineup yet again provided the Millers to see which combinations may work once sections start, as well as to check on section individual lineup options.  The Millers go back to work this upcoming week with matches against Henry, St Michael Albertville and Woodbury.

Washburn over Orono 6-1

Despite being shorthanded in the match due to choir and band concerts, Washburn banded together to beat a very good Orono team.  A number of close matches went Washburn’s way proving the Miller mental game was just too strong this day.  Henry Smith, playing with yet another new doubles partner, led the way to a comeback win finishing the match off in impressive fashion.

Washburn Battles in Rochester Tournament

The Washburn tennis team faced stiff competition this weekend in a flighted tournament in Rochester.  Competing in the tournament were five teams ranked in top 10 of state.  Rochester Mayo finished first while Minnetonka and Mounds View (defending state champ) rounded out the top three.  Washburn finished fifth, ahead of #7 ranked Lakeville South in the 8 team field.  The Millers can clinch their fifth consecutive conference championship this week with a win over Minneapolis South on Tuesday.

Washburn Millers Continues Conference Win Streak Beating Edison 7-0!

Led by senior Andy Pulkrabek’s last conference match, the Millers ran their consecutive conference streak to 27 straight victories over a five year span with their convincing 7-0 victory over previously undefeated Minneapolis Edison. See Minnesota Prep Spotlight video highlighting Washburn Players Andy Pulkrabek & Rafa Malewicz. Overall the Millers won 84 of the 101 games played, not dropping a set.  Two 8th graders, Eli Zukor-Zimmerman and Max Loesch spearheaded the lopsided win with their wins at 3rd and 4th singles respectively.  The win gives Washburn a 9-3 record with a match against Holy Family coming Friday to finish out the week.  The varsity then heads to Rochester Mayo for a tournament with a loaded field that will include 4 of the top 10 class AA teams in state.

Washburn JV wins Alexandria Tournament!

(ALEXANDRIA, MN) The Washburn Millers JV team hit the road to Alexandria to play a quad against Litchfield, Crookston and host team Alexandria. The tournament started against Alexandria where the Millers put up a convincing 7-0 win. Big wins included a 8-1 win for Aaron Walker (9) and an 8-0 win for Fletcher Thomas (9)/Tom Mullin (8).
Washburn had Crookston up next, who proved to be the toughest match of the day. The Millers pulled out a 4-3 win clinched by the doubles team of Luke Hollister (11) and Max Loesch (8). The Millers had other wins from Ben Katzman (11), Aaron Walker (9) and Tom Mullin (8).
Washburn finished out the quad against Litchfield. Washburn clinched the match and tournament win with a decisive 6-1 victory over Dragons.
Overall, the Millers went 17-4 for the tournament and saw Ben Katzman (11), Aaron Walker (9) and Tom Mullin (8) all go 3-0 for the day.
